Family Vacations in Tucson

Expand your horizons while hiking, caving and stargazing

Tucson, Arizona is a destination for families seeking to bond off the beaten path at kid-friendly attractions. At the top of the must-see list for kids and adults alike is Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a TripAdvisor top-rated natural history museum, zoo and botanical garden. Adventurers who are not claustrophobic will enjoy guided tours at two Tucson-area underground caves: Colossal Cave Mountain Park is a crystal-filled maze that once sheltered stagecoach robbers. South of Tucson, near Benson, the world-renowned Kartchner Caverns State Park is still growing its magnificent multi-colored formations (reservations required). Families can get back to nature at Saguaro National Park, where the rare giant saguaro cactus grows; expand their horizons at Mt Lemmon SkyCenter, a mountaintop home to scientific telescopes; explore marvels of the universe at Flandrau Planetarium, with its full-dome theater; and learn about constellations and view them through a telescope at night at Kitt Peak National Observatory. For kids aged two through 12, the Tucson Children’s Museum has hands-on educational exhibits and special events. During the daily Giraffe Encounter, families get to feed snacks to gentle giants at Reid Park Zoo. Just north of Tucson, in rural Oracle, Biosphere 2 beckons environmentalists of all ages with the Earth’s largest living science center. While in neighboring Tombstone, “The Town Too Tough to Die,” costumed characters, stagecoach rides and living history demonstrations bring to life the real Old West. Families can have fun and expand their horizons on vacation, in Tucson.
