Il Viaggio Travel Makes Costa Rican Beaches More Accessible

CR Dona Tapa is making beaches accessible for people of all abilities.

Costa Rica-based ground operator Il Viaggio Travel recently celebrated the opening of the first accessible beach in all Central America, a result of the company’s non-profit charity, Red Costarricense de Turismo Accesible.

One of the first individuals to take advantage of Dona Tapa’s new recycled plastic accessible walkways.

Red Costarricense de Turismo Accesible and the Costa Rican government are working to make the country a more accessible destination for tourists and locals alike. Il Viaggio’s owners – and FTA members – Stephanie Sheehy and Emilio Zuniga, saw the need from their caring for families with disabilities vacationing in Costa Rica.

“We believe that every family needs accessibility in a certain way,” Sheehy said. “If a family is traveling with small children, they will need accessibility for strollers. And if they are traveling with grandparents, they also need accessibility and safety.”

One of Dona Tapa’s new accessible walkways manufactured from recycled plastic.

“With this in mind we also work with families who have a family member with a disability which can be physical, sensory or cognitional. We help families create the perfect trip based on the family member conditions.”

Red Costarricense de Turismo Accesible started Dona Tapa, an initiative to convert recycled plastic into accessible beach pathways that can be rolled up during high tide. On March 1st, Dona Tapa inaugurated the first accessible beach with 21 pathways manufactured from 420,000 recycled objects and 521 kilograms of plastic bags.
