‘Better Together – Fostering inclusion in family travel’
October 23 – 27, 2017 • Royal Caribbean International’s Majesty of the Seas • Port Canaveral, Florida
A note about sustainability, from FTA Summit host Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL):
At Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL), safeguarding the world’s oceans, the destinations where we operate, and protecting the health and well-being of our guests and crewmembers are of paramount importance. Our commitment to sustainability and sound stewardship is a journey.
Our sustainability goals are important to our company, to the communities our ships visit every day around the world, and to our guests. They are part of our very consciousness, at the heart of which is a simple commitment to protect and preserve the environments and communities in which we operate. The oceans provide millions of people around the world with food, livelihoods, transportation, and wonder. They also supply oxygen to all life on the planet. It is our responsibility to help protect and preserve the oceans and coastal communities that bring our guests so much delight. RCCL is also committed to helping in the communities that our employees and their families call home.
Our company has a history of ocean conservation and environmental stewardship. Just a few examples include the formalization of our Save the Waves® program in 1992, placement of an environmental officer on every ship beginning in 1996, the installation of state-of-the-art wastewater treatment systems on our ships, and our waste reduction initiatives, which have evolved to repurpose 100% of the offloaded waste from our ships when they end cruises in Florida ports. As part of our destination stewardship program, we also aligned with nongovernmental and governmental organizations to form the Sustainable Destinations Alliance for the Americas, with the intention of helping the destinations in that region remain healthy and vibrant for years to come.
RCCL’s recent sustainability achievements include:
- Implemented processes to repurpose 100% of the offloaded, non-hazardous waste from the two largest ships in the world, Oasis of the Seas® and Allure of the Seas®, and did the same on 10 more of our ships sailing from Florida
- Began repurposing 100% of the hazardous/ special waste from seven of those 12 ships
- Continued to work toward our 33% greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal for 2015, we reached 21%, as a result of improvements in our technologies, operations, and ship design
- Labadee, our private destination in Haiti, achieved the industry’s – and RCL’s – second Gold Level EcoCertification for sustainable tourism
